"Hailey" Hat and Skirt Set

I originally made the "Hailey" skirt during a sleepless night when I wanted something very quick and simple.  I know other people like quick and simple things too, so I wrote the "Hailey" hat pattern to go with the skirt.

I then wanted to extend that to a Hat and Skirt pattern covering at least 3 different sizes from newborn through to 12 months old.

This pattern covers all three sizes for both hat and skirt, and, additionally, gives ideas of how to make the set up using different colourways, with different waist ties, and different hems.  Also, I have included two different flowers (one is a link to the original source.)  A very simple pattern, but with a lot of potential!

Pattern is written in US terms, UK terms at the end

Materials required:  For each skirt and hat set1 skein of light worsted/dk/8 ply yarn in whichever colour you choose, or in a mix of colours;  3.75mm and 4mm hooks; 1 button if you wish to put a button on a hat, and a yarn needle.

Sizes:  0-3 months; 3-6 months; 6-12 months for both hats and skirts.

Abbreviations:  sc = single crochet; dc = double crochet; hdc = half double crochet; sk = skip; rep = repeat; beg = beginning; sl st = slip stitch; fo = fasten off; ch = chain

Little “star” flower

Make a magic ring, *sc into ring, ch 3*, rep 5 times, (5 x 3ch loops), sl st to first sc.

Change colour

(Sc, hdc, dc, chain 3 picot, dc, hdc, sc) into each of the 5 loops.  Fasten off.

(To make “chain 3 picot”, chain 3, slip stitch into the 1st chain of the 3 you just made), then carry on with the next stitch in the pattern.

The second type of flower I used is not my design, you can find it at: http://www.myhobbyiscrochet.com/2013/04/crochet-blackberry-flower-pattern.html

Slanted Shell Edging:

Ch1, (sc, hdc, dc) in same “V” space, (sc, hdc, dc) in next and every following “V” space.  Sl st to beg sc.  Fasten off, and weave in ends.

Tie and tassels:  Using a 6m piece of yarn doubled, Chain 140. Fasten off.  Don’t cut the ends, you can use them in the tassels.  Take 3 lengths of white yarn 6” long and 2 lengths of blue yarn 6” long (you already have 2 strands if you left the tail ends on the chain you made – if not, add in another strand of blue yarn), fold them in half, pull the loop end through the end of the ribbon tie, pull the loose ends through loop end to knot and make a tassel.  Repeat for other tie.  Trim to desired length.  Tidy up and weave in ends.
