Catie's Cardi ~ 6-8 years

This is the final version of "Catie's Cardi" for the time being - this time to fit age 6-8 years.



The same as all the other sizes in design, except this time, with Christmas being not so far off for us crafters, I did it in holiday colours. 

With the same cable stitch as before, and crocheted in worsted weight yarn, this cardi will be warm but not too warm, because it is sleeveless.

I have enjoyed making this series of cardigans - I hope you have enjoyed the journey with me.


Catie’s Cardi ~ 6-8 years
    

Size 6-8 years: Actual measurements: Chest 28-30”; Width at hem 30-32”; Length from neckline to hem 16”

Materials: 2 skeins worsted weight (aran/10ply) yarn (I used Stylecraft Special Aran (10ply) in Colour A; 4.5mm and 5mm hook; 3 buttons; yarn needle; Oddments of Colour B and C if making the striped version.

Abbreviations: sc=single crochet; dc=double crochet; hdc= half double crochet; tr=treble; Cr3R=Cross 3 Right; Cr3L=Cross 3 Left (See Special Stitches); sk=skip; ch=chain; beg=beginning; st=stitch; sp=space.

Gauge: 12 sts and 10 rows on hdc, 4.5mm hook = 4”;  Width of 1 complete cable (8 sts) on 5mm hook = 2.5”

Special Stitches: Cr3R = skip 2 sts; work 1 tr in next st; working behind last tr work 1dc into each of the 2 skipped sts; Cr3L = skip 1 st; work 1dc into each of the next 2 sts; working in front of the last 2 dc; work 1 tr into the skipped st.


Pattern is written in USA terms; Chart included at the end for US/UK terminology.


Pattern:

With 4.5mm hook and Colour B, Ch 52, sc in 2nd ch from hook, and to end. Turn. (51)

Row 1: Ch2 (counts as 1 st); hdc in next 7 sts; (hdc, ch1, hdc) in next st; hdc in next 9 sts; (hdc, ch1, hdc) in next st; hdc in next 13 sts; (hdc, ch1, hdc) in next st; hdc in next 9 sts; (hdc, ch1, hdc) in next st; hdc in next 8 sts; Turn.

Row 2: Ch2, hdc in next 8 sts; (hdc, ch1, hdc) in next st; hdc in next 11 sts; (hdc, ch1, hdc) in next st; hdc in next 15 sts; (hdc, ch1, hdc) in next st; hdc in next 11 sts; (hdc, ch1, hdc) in next st; hdc in next 9 sts. Turn.

Change to Colour A.

Row 8: Ch2, hdc in next 14 sts; (hdc, ch1, hdc) in next st; hdc in next 23 sts; (hdc, ch1, hdc) in next st; hdc in next 27 sts; (hdc, ch1, hdc) in next st; hdc in next 23 sts; (hdc, ch1, hdc) in next st; hdc in next 15 sts. Turn.

Change to Colour B.

Row 9:  Ch2, hdc in next 15 sts; (hdc, ch1, hdc) in next st; hdc in next 25 sts; (hdc, ch1, hdc) in next st; hdc in next 29 sts; (hdc, ch1, hdc) in next st; hdc in next 25 sts; (hdc, ch1, hdc) in next st; hdc in next 16 sts.  Turn.

Row 10: Ch2, hdc in next 16 sts; (hdc, ch1, hdc) in next st; hdc in next 27 sts; (hdc, ch1, hdc) in next st; hdc in next 31 sts; (hdc, ch1, hdc) in next st; hdc in next 27 sts; (hdc, ch1, hdc) in next st; hdc in next 17 sts.  Turn. 

Change to Colour A.

Row 11: Ch2, hdc in next 17 sts; (hdc, ch1, hdc) in next st; hdc in next 29 sts; (hdc, ch1, hdc) in next st; hdc in next 33 sts; (hdc, ch1, hdc) in next st; hdc in next 29 sts; (hdc, ch1, hdc) in next st; hdc in next 18 sts.  Turn. 

Row 12:  Ch2, hdc in net 18 sts; 2hdc in next st; chain 5; skip next 31 sts; 2hdc in next st; hdc in next 35 sts; 2 hdc in next st; chain 5; skip next 31 sts; 2hdc in next st; hdc to end.  (91)

Change to 5mm hook

Row 13:  ch1, sc across, including the chain 5 under each armhole.  Turn.

Row 14:  Ch3, dc in next st; *Cr3R, dc in next st; Cr3L, dc in next st*; rep from * to * to end; hdc in last st.  Turn.

Row 15:  Ch1, sc across to end.  Turn.

Repeat Rows 14 and 15 until work measures 16” from neckline, or to desired length.



Next Row: Ch1, sc across to end. In last st, 1 sc, ch1, 1sc, then work evenly in sc up the right front side to the neckline. Turn.

Buttonhole band: Ch1, sc in same st and in next st; ch2, sk 2 sts; sc in next 4 sts; ch2, sk 2 sts; sc in next 4 sts; ch2, sk 2 sts; sc to end, turning at hemline.

Next Row: Ch1, sc back up the neckline, working 2sc into each ch2 space (buttonholes). Fasten off.

Buttonband: With RS facing, attach yarn to neck edge of left front; Ch1, sc evenly to hemline (make sure you have the same number of sts on left and right sides); turn.

Ch1, sc back up to neckline.

Ch1, sc back down to hemline. Fasten off.

Change to Colour C. 

Attach yarn to bottom of right front side, sc up right front, (sc, ch1, sc) in top corner st; sc around neckline; (sc, ch1, sc) in top left front corner; sc down left front; (sc, ch1, sc) in bottom corner of left front; sc across hem of cardigan, back to bottom right front corner; (sc, ch1, sc) in corner stitch, sl st to beg sc.  Fasten off.

Sleeve edges:

Using Colour C:  With RS facing, attach yarn to bottom of armhole, in the centre of the 5 sc you worked previously, and sc evenly around sleeve edge. Sl st to beg sc. Fasten off. Repeat for the other armhole, making sure you have an equal amount of sts on both sides.

Sew on 3 buttons, weave in ends.
