Button:

Row 1:  Make a magic ring; ch1; work 8 sc into ring; sl st to beg sc. (8)

Row  2:  Ch1, work 2 hdc into every stitch around, sl st to beg hdc. (16)

Row 3:   Ch1, sc in each st around, sl st to beg sc. The circle will begin to curl towards you – flip it so that it curls away from you.

Pull ring tight now and fasten down end of yarn before proceeding.

Row 4:  Ch1, sc2tog in every stitch around, sl st to beg sc.

Row 5: Ch1, sc2tog in every stitch around, sl st to beg sc. Fasten off.  Cut yarn, leaving yourself about 6” spare.

Using a yarn needle, thread the end through the end of the yarn through each stitch left around the circle, and pull tightly to close the hole.  Press the button down flat between your fingers, and use the yarn end that is left to attach it to the top of the hat.  You can, if you wish, place a button inside as you are working to stiffen it, but it is not necessary. The button will sit flat all by itself.
Weave in all your ends, and your button-top hat is complete!

Enjoy!
