Snow White Baby Bonnet

Size 0-3 months, 6-12 months (4mm hook)

3-6 months, 1-3 yrs (4.5mm hook)

Materials:  1 skein worsted weight yarn (aran/10ply); 4mm hook; 4.5mm hook; yarn needle

Abbreviations:  sc = single crochet; hdc = half double crochet; dc = double crochet; sl st = slip stitch; beg = beginning; rep = repeat; yo = yarn over; rem = remaining.

Gauge:  16sts x 10 rows on 4mm hook hdc = 4”

Pattern is worked the same for all sizes, using the required hook for size required, as listed above.  

Where there are figures in brackets, these refer to the larger sizes.

Pattern is written in US terms; a conversion chart is included at the end.


Pattern:

All sizes, using correct hook for size required:

Row 1:  make a magic ring; ch1, sc 8 into ring, sl st to beg sc. (8)

Row 2: Ch3, yo, insert hook into same st as ch3, pull yarn through, yo, pull through 2 loops; yo, insert hook into same st, pull yarn through, yo, pull yarn through 2 loops, yo, pull yarn through rem 3 loops, ch1.   *Yo, insert yarn into same st, pull yarn through, yo, pull through 2 loops, yo, insert hook into same st, pull yarn through, yo, pull through 2 loops, yo, insert hook into same st, pull yo through, yo, pull through 2 loops, yo, pull through rem 4 loops, ch1.* Sk 1 st.  **Rep from * to* twice in next st, sk 1 st.** Rep from ** to ** to end.  Join with beg ch3. (16)

Row 3:   Ch2, hdc in same st, 2 hdc in next st, *hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st*; rep from * to * to end.  Sl st to beg hdc.  (24)

Row 4:  As Row 2, but this time, skip 2 sts in between double clusters instead of just sk 1.  (32)

Row 5:  Ch2, hdc in same, 2 hdc in next, *hdc in next 2, 2 hdc in next*; rep to last 3 sts, hdc in last 3 sts, sl st to beg hdc (40)

**6-12 months; 1-3 years**:  rep Row 2, again skipping 2 sts between double clusters. 

**6-12 months; 1 – 3 years**:  ch2, hdc around.  Sl st to beg hdc.

All sizes:

Row 6:  Ch3, insert hook into second chain from hook, pull yarn through, lifting it to the same height as the ch3, (2 loops on hook), insert hook into 3rd ch from hook, pull yarn through, again, lifting the yarn slightly each time to get all loops to the same height, (3 loops on hook), insert hook into base of same st, pull yarn through (4 loops on hook); insert hook into next st, pull yarn through (5 loops on hook); insert hook into next st, pull yarn through (6 loops on hook); yo, pull through all 6 loops, ch1.  *Insert hook into the “eye” of the star you just made, pull yarn through (2 loops on hook), insert hook into the side of the last loop of the star, pull yarn through (3 loops on hook), insert hook into base of last st, pull yarn through (4 loops on hook), insert hook into next st, pull yarn through (5 loops on hook), insert hook into next st, pull yarn through (6 loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through all 6 loops, ch1.*  Rep from * to * to end. (20 (28) stars).  Hdc into the same st as star you just completed.  Do not join.  Turn.

Row 7:  Ch2, 2 hdc into each “eye” of the stars from the previous row; rep to end, hdc into the top of the ch3 from prev row. Turn.

Repeat rows 6 and 7 until bonnet measures 5.5”(6”, 6.5”, 7”) from beginning. 

Edging:  Ch3, 4 dc into same st; *sk 1, 1 hdc into next st, sk 1, 5 dc into next st*; rep from * to * to last st.  (Dc 4, 1 hdc) into the last st, do not turn, carry on around the corner.

Single crochet all around the back edge, and when you reach the end of the back edge, hdc into the last st (same st as beg ch3 from the front of the hat).  Do not fasten off.

Chain 40 (40, 50, 50).  Turn and sc 1 into 2nd chain from hook and all the way back to the start of the chain you just made.  Sl st to hat and finish off.

Attach yarn to the opposite from side, and repeat the strap as in the previous row.  Fasten off.  Weave in ends.
