To fit 6-12 months.
1 Skein Worsted weight yarn (4); oddment of contrasting colour; 1 button
5mm (H/8) crochet hook. Gauge: 3 rib sts and 3 rows = 1” using 5mm hook
6-12 months: Circumference 14.5” – 16” (37-41 cm); hat length 6.5” – 7” (17-18 cm)
Abbreviations: sc = single crochet; dc = double crochet; hdc = half double crochet; fphdc = front post half double crochet; fpsc = front post single crochet; sl st = slip stitch; beg = beginning; rep = repeat; ch = chain
6-12 months: Using 5mm hook,
Round One: Make a magic Ring, chain 1, 8 HDC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: Work 2 HDC into each st around, join, chain 1 (16 HDC)
Round 3: 2 HDC in first stitch, *HDC in next, 2HDC in next*, Repeat around, join, chain 1 (24 HDC)
Round 4: 2 HDC in first stitch, *HDC in next 2, 2 HDC in next*, Repeat around, join, chain 1 (32 HDC)
Round 5: 2 HDC in first stitch, *HDC in next 3, 2 HDC in next*, Repeat around, join, chain 2 (40 HDC)
Round 6: Fpdc in first st, place marker, fpdc in every stitch around, do not join
Round 7: Fpdc in beg ch2 from the end of round 5, fpdc around, and continue working in rounds, in pattern, until hat measures 6”.
On the last row of the ribbing, work until 2 sts remain. Fphdc in next, fpsc in next, and sl st into the next st.
Next Row: Ch 1, sc in same st as ch 1, sc in every stitch around, sl st to beg ch1
Next Row: Repeat previous sc row 3 more times.
Next Row: Change to contrasting colour, ch 1, and work one more row of sc around, sl st to beg ch1, fasten off and weave in ends invisibly.
Sew on a pretty button, or embellish with a flower if you like, or, just leave the hat plain!
To make a simple flower:
With contrasting colour, ch 9, join to beg ch to make a ring.
(Ch 1, hdc, dc, hdc, ch1) all into the same stitch, sl st to same st,
*Skip 1 chain, (ch 1, hdc, dc, hdc, ch1) into next st, sl st to same st, and then sl st into the next st.*
Repeat 3 more times to make a total of 5 petals.
Slip stitch to beg ch1, fasten off and weave in ends.
Slip the flower over the button, and your hat is complete.
