Lemon Sorbet Baby Dress

Sizes; 0-3 months; 3-6 Months

A pretty little dress that can be made in worsted weight yarn – either a warm yarn for colder weather, or worsted weight cotton for Spring and Summer. I used Stylecraft Special Aran for the colder weather dress.

Pattern is written in US terms; a conversion chart is included at the end.

Difficulty: Easy

Materials needed: 2 skeins worsted weight (aran/10ply) yarn, 1 in Colour A, 1 in Colour B; 4.5mm hook for 0-3 months; 5mm (H) hook for 3-6 months; yarn needle for sewing up ends; 2 or 3 small buttons

Finished sizes: 0-3 months: Chest 16” – 18”; Waist 16” – 18”; Length from back to hem: 12”; 3-6 months; Chest 18”-20”; Waist 18”-20”; Length from back to hem 13” (easily adjustable by adding or subtracting rows).

Abbreviations: sc = single crochet; hdc = half double crochet; dc = double crochet; rep = repeat; beg = beginning; sk = skip; yo = yarn over; sl st = slip stitch

Gauge:  8 clusters and 10 rows of clusters on 5mm hook = 4"

Special Stitches: Mesh Cluster: This stitch begins with a setting out row, and a pattern row. Every row from there follows the second row.

1st Row of Mesh Cluster Stitch: Yarn over, insert hook into 3rd chain from hook, pull yarn through, skip 1 chain, insert hook into next chain, pull yarn through, yarn over, pull through all 4 loops, chain 1; *Yarn over, insert hook into same st as last loop, pull yarn through, sk 1, pull yarn through next st, yo, pull through all 4 loops, ch1 *Repeat from * to * to last 2 sts. Yarn over, insert hook into same stitch as last loop, pull the yarn through, sk 1, insert hook into next chain, pull yarn through, yarn over, pull through all 4 loops; turn.

2nd Row of Mesh Cluster Stitch: Chain 2, yarn over, insert hook into 1st space (directly next to ch 2), pull yarn through, insert hook into next space, pull yarn through, yarn over, draw yarn through all 4 loops, ch 1; *yarn over, insert hook into same space as last loop, pull yarn through, insert hook into next space, pull yarn through, yarn over, draw yarn through all 4 loops; ch 1*; repeat from * to * to last stitch. Yarn over, insert hook into same st as last loop, pull yarn through, insert hook into top of ch2 from prev row, yarn over, draw through all 4 loops; turn.
Notes: Each Mesh Cluster stitch as per Row Two instructions is, basically, (hd2tog, ch1). Always begin Mesh Cluster in the same space as the last one you previously worked, unless instructed to do otherwise. In straight rows, always complete Mesh Cluster at the end of the row by working into the top of ch2 from previous row, unless instructed to do otherwise.
Stitch numbers, etc. for 0-3 months are given first, numbers/measurements for 3-6 months are given in brackets.

Pick up Colour A again, attach yarn at centre back opening, at the bottom of the left back.

Ch1, sc to end, turn.

Ch1, sc all round neckline again, working 3sc into corners, and continuing on the end of Right Back.

Fasten off, leaving a length of yarn to slip stitch bottom edge of buttonhole band, making it overlap the Right Back.
Armholes:

Attach yarn to centre underarm, ch 1, sc evenly around armhole, sl st to beg ch1.

Ch 1, work another row of sc around armhole, sl st to beg ch 1.

Ch 2, 4hdc in same st, *sk 1 st, 5 hdc in next st*, rep from * to * to end, sl st to beg ch 2.

Repeat for the other armhole, making sure you have the same number of shells around both armholes.
Waist Tie:

Take two strands of yarn together, ch 130, fasten off. Thread through the existing mesh holes, and tie in a bow.

Sew on 2 or 3 buttons to the back of the dress, corresponding to the buttonholes you made, fasten off, tidy up ends, and your pretty dress is done!

Embellish how you like, with maybe a flower, or a pretty button on the front.

I check and double check my patterns but if you find any errors, feel free to get in touch and let me know so that I can fix it!
Enjoy!
