Little Vs Beanie


 


    


Hooks required:

4mm                    0-3 months
4.5mm                 3-6 months
4.5mm                 1-3 years
4.5mm                 3-10 years
5mm                    6-12 months
5mm                    Pre-Teens and Teens
5mm                    Adult
 


Pattern is written in US terms; a conversion chart is included at the end.

Abbreviations: 

Sc – single crochet
Hdc – half double crochet
Dc – double crochet
Sl st – slip stitch




Materials required:

1 Skein Worsted weight yarn (4) in Colour A
Small amount of worsted weight yarn in Colour B
4mm (G/6); 4.5mm (7); 5mm (H/8) crochet hook.



Dimensions:

0-3 months: Circumference 11.5” – 13” (29-33 cm); hat length 5.5” (13 cm)
3-6 months: Circumference 12.5” – 14” (32-36 cm); hat length 6.5” (16.5 cm)
6-12 months: Circumference 14.5” – 16” (37-41 cm); hat length 7.5” (19cm)
1 to 3 years: Circumference 16.5” – 18” (42-46 cm); hat length 8” (20 cm)
3 to 10 years: Circumference 17.5” – 19” (44-48 cm); hat length 8.5” (22 cm)
Pre-Teens and Teens: Circumference 19” – 20.5” (48-52 cm); hat length 9” (25 cm)
Adult woman: Circumference 20” – 21.5” (48-57 cm); hat height 11” (28 cm)  



Pattern:

** Please use required hook for your chosen size, as in the chart above **



ALL SIZES:
Make a magic ring (alternatively, chain 4, sl st into 1st ch to make a ring).

Row One:  chain 3 (counts as 1 dc), dc 7 into ring (8 dc); join to beg ch3

Row Two:  3ch, 1 dc in same stitch as 3ch, then 2 dc in each stitch around, slip stitch to top of 3ch (16)

Row Three:  3ch, 1dc in same stitch as 3ch, *1 dc in next st; 2 dc in next st*; rep from * to * to end, 1 dc in last st, sl st to 3ch (24)

Row Four: 3ch, 1dc in same stitch as 3ch, *1 dc in next 2 stitches; 2 dc in next st*; rep from * to * last 2 sts, 1 dc in each of last 2 sts, sl st to 3ch (32)


**Sizes 0-3 months; 3-6 months; 6-12 months – skip rows Five and Six and move on to Row Seven**


Row Five:  3ch, 1dc in same stitch as 3ch; *1dc in next 3 stitches; 2 dc in next st*; rep from * to * to last 3 sts, 1 dc in each of last 3 sts, sl st to 3 ch (40)


** 1-3 years and Pre-Teens/ Teens – skip Row Six and move on to Row Seven**

Row Six:

** Size 3 – 10 years only – 3 ch, 1 dc in same stitch as 3 ch; *1 dc in next 4 sts; 2 dc in next st*; rep from * to * to last 4 sts, 1dc in each of last 4 sts, sl st to beg 3 ch (48)

**Size Adult only – 3 ch, 1 dc in same stitch as 3ch; *1dc in next 5 stitches; 2 dc in next st*; rep from * to * to last 5 sts 1 dc in each of last 5 sts, sl st to 3 ch (56)


Row Seven:  Ch 3, 1 dc in same space; *skip 2 spaces, 2 dc in each of next 2 spaces*; rep from * to * to last st, 2 dc in last st, join to beg ch 3.

Row Eight: ch 3, dc in same space, *sk next space, 2 dc in next space (in the centre of the “V” from the previous row *; repeat around to last “V”, 2 dc in centre of “V”, join to beg ch3.

Continue in pattern to 1 inch from desired length (see “dimensions” above for hat lengths)

Change to colour B, repeat Row Eight.

Change to Colour A, repeat Row Eight.

Change to colour B, repeat Row Eight.

For a boy’s beanie, you can end here, or pick up Colour A again and work one or two rows of sc around.  Finish with an invisible join.

For the girl’s hat, pick up Colour A again, and work a scallop row as follows:

Ch 1, sc in same st, *work 5 dc into the centre of the next “V”, sc in the centre of the next “V”*; rep from * to * to last “V”, 5 dc in last V, join to beg sc. Fasten off.


Tiny Flower:

With colour A, make a magic ring and ch 1. 

Sc 6 into Magic Ring, join to beg ch 1, and fasten off

Attach colour B to any sc, (ch 1, hdc 3, ch 1, sl st into same space) all into the same stitch,  slip st to next sc from previous row;  (ch 1, hdc 3, ch 1, sl st into same space) in each sc around, making a total of six petals.  Fasten off.

Attach the flower to the hat, maybe with a little pearl or button in the centre and tidy up all ends.
