Special stitch:  3ch picot:  work 3 chain, then slip stitch into 1st chain you just made to form the “picot.

Pattern:

Using 4 mm hook for newborn, 4.5mm for 3-6 mths, 5 mm for 6-12 mths and 12 mths-3 yrs
Make a magic ring (alternatively, chain 4, sl st into 1st ch to make a ring).

Magic Ring Tutorial here

Row One:  2ch, (does not count as 1 hdc), 8 hdc into ring, slip stitch to top of 2ch (8)

Row Two:  2ch, 1 hdc in same stitch as 2ch, then 2 hdc in each stitch around, slip stitch to top of 2ch (16)

Row Three:  2ch, 1hdc in same stitch as 2ch, *1 hdc in next st; 2 hdc in next st*;  rep from * to * to end, sl st to 2ch (24)

Row Four: 2ch, 1hdc in same stitch as 2ch, *1 hdc in next 2 stitches; 2 hdc in next st*; rep from * to * to end, sl st to 2ch (32)

Row Five:  2ch, 1hdc in same stitch as 2ch, *1 hdc in next 3 stitches; 2 hdc in next st*; rep from * to * to end, sl st to 2ch (40)

*** For 12 months to 3 years only:  2ch, 1 hdc in same stitch as 2ch, *1 hdc in next 4 stitches; 2 hdc in next stitch*; rep from * to * to end, sl st to 2 ch (48)

Rows Six and Seven:  2ch, work hdc in blo to end of row for both rows – you can choose to sl st to the beginning 2ch, or you can begin to work in a continuous round.  Either will work.  I tend to place a marker and start working in a continuous round from here to avoid a back seam.  If you choose to work in a continuous round, skip the 2ch at the beginning of these rows (and all following rows) and go straight to working hdc all round.

Rows Eight and Nine:  2ch, work hdc normally (in both loops) for both rows (unless working continuously, in which case, omit the beginning 2ch).

Row Ten - end) Repeat the last 4 rows until the hat is the desired length (as stated in “dimensions”).  Try to finish with one blo row, so as to form one last ridge.

Edging:  *sc 3, 3ch picot*, rep from * to * all round.  Join with first sc and finish off. (If worked in a continuous round, slip stitch once here before finishing off.)

Make the hat a “turban”:  Using about a yard of yarn, doubled, and a yarn needle, thread the yarn round and around from the bottom front edge up to the start of the 2nd ridge, as in the picture, keeping the fabric neatly positioned under the gather.

Once you have wrapped around a few times, secure the yarn inside the hat.

Add a button, bead, or your own chosen embellishment, tidy up any ends, and your “turban” style hat is done”.
