ALL SIZES:

With Red yarn, make a magic ring (alternatively, chain 4, sl st into 1st ch to make a ring).

Row One:  chain 3 (does not count as 1 dc), dc 9 into ring (9 dc)

Row Two:  3ch, 2 dc in same stitch as 3ch, then 2 dc in each stitch around, slip stitch to beg dc (18)

Row Three:  3ch, 2dc in same stitch as 3ch, *1 dc in next st; 2 dc in next st*;  rep from * to * to end, sl st to beg dc (27)

Row Four: 3ch, 2dc in same stitch as 3ch, *1 dc in next 2 stitches; 2 dc in next st*; rep from * to * to end, sl st to beg dc (36)

**Sizes 0-3 months; 3-6 months; 6-12 months – skip rows Five and Six and move on to Row Seven**

Row Five:  3ch, 2dc in same stitch as 3ch; *1dc in next 3 stitches; 2 dc in next st*; rep from * to * to end, sl st to beg dc (45)

** 1-3 years and Pre-Teens/ Teens – skip Row Six and move on to Row Seven**

Row Six:

** Size 3 – 10 years only – 3 ch, 2 dc in same stitch as 3 ch; 1 dc in each stitch around, increasing 2 more times evenly, sl st to beg dc (48)

**Size Adult only – 3 ch, 2 dc in same stitch as 3ch; *1dc in next 4 stitches; 2 dc in next st*; rep from * to * to end, sl st to beg dc (54)

Row Seven:  3ch, dc in each stitch around, sl st to beg dc

Repeat Row Seven to 1” from desired length, as in the chart above.  Fasten off Red.

Next Row:  Attach Blue at the back seam, ch 3 and dc around as before, sl st to beg dc.

Next Row:  Repeat previous row twice more.   Fasten off blue.

Next Row:  Attach Red again at the back seam with a sl st.

BrimAll sizes:

Row One: 1ch; 2 sc in each stitch around

Row Two to end:  1 ch, sc in each stitch around to desired brim length.  A cloche would take roughly 4 rows after the increase row, a sunhat would take more, depending on how floppy you want it to be.

If you are making  a wide brim sunhat, work an increase row (sc 1 in 3 sts, 2 sc in next st) every third row.

You can edge the hat how you like, or leave it plain sc.  Fasten off and tidy up ends.

Add a ribbon, or a flower for extra prettiness

Star:

First Row:  Make 2 chain, make 10 sc into 2nd ch from hook, sl st to first sc

Next Row:  ch 1, sc in same stitch as ch 1, 2sc in next st, (sc in next st, 2sc in next st) around, sl st to 1st sc (15 sc)

Next Row:  (ch 6, sl st in 2nd ch from hook,  sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in each of next 2 chains, miss next sc in previous round, sl st into next sc), repeat around giving you 5 star points in total.

Fasten off, leaving a length of yarn for sewing onto hat, tidy up ends.  Sew onto hat.
