4th July Table Set

A pretty 4th July Placemat and Coaster set - you can make enough for a whole family if you wish! Very easy, very quick, and made with 100% cotton, easily kept clean!

Coaster size: Approx 5” diameter
Placemat size: Approx 13” diameter

Difficulty: Easy

Gauge: Not important for this pattern.

Materials: 1 skein of each colour Red, White and Blue in worsted weight cotton yarn. ( I used Lily Sugar ‘n Cream as this produces a more rigid fabric.) 4mm hook; yarn needle for tidying up ends.

Special Stitch: Cluster (Cl): yo, insert hook into relevant stitch, draw yarn through (3 loops on hook), yo, draw through 2 loops, yo, insert hook into same st, draw yarn through (4 loops on hook), yo , draw through 2 loops, yo, draw through remaining 3 loops, ch 1).

Abbreviations: sc = single crochet; hdc = half double crochet; dc = double crochet; sp = space; sl st = slip stitch; yo = yarn over; rep = repeat; beg = beginning; ch = chain; cl = Cluster (See Special Stitch above); inc = increase.

Pattern is written in US terms, a conversion chart is included at the end.

Pattern:

Coasters:

Row 1: With 4mm hook, and Red, make a magic ring (alternatively, chain 4, sl st into 1st ch to make a ring).

Row 2: Chain 1 (does not count as 1 hdc), hdc 9 into ring, sl st to beg hdc. (9)

Row 3: ch 1, 2 dc in same stitch as ch1, then 2 dc in each stitch around, slip stitch to beg dc (18) Fasten off Red.

Row 4: Attach White to any space between dcs; Ch 1, Cl in same space and every space around. Sl st to beg cl. (18 clusters) Fasten off White.

Row 5: Attach Blue to any space between clusters; Ch1, sc in same space; sc 2 in every space around; sc again into starting space, sl st to beg sc.

Row 6: Ch1, sl st to next space; Into this space and every space following, work (sc, hdc, dc); sl st to beg sc. Fasten off Blue and tidy up ends.

Placemat:

Rows 1-4: With 4mm hook, work exactly as “Coasters” to Row 4 (18 clusters). Fasten off White.

Row 5: Attach Blue to any space between clusters; Ch1, cl into this space; *2 cl into next sp; 1 cl into next sp*; rep from * to * around; sl st to beg cl; Fasten off Blue. (27 clusters)

Row 6: Attach Red to space between a double cluster (where inc was made on last round); Ch1, 2 cl into this space; 1 cl into next 2 spaces; *2 cl into next space; 1 cluster into next 2 spaces*; rep from * to * to end. sl st to beg cl. Fasten off Red. (36 clusters).

Row 7: Attach White to space between a double cluster (where inc was made on last round); Ch1, 2 cl into this space; 1 cl into next 3 spaces; *2 cl into next space; 1 cluster into next 3 spaces*; rep from * to * to end. sl st to beg cl. Fasten off White. 45 clusters).

Row 8: Attach Blue to space between a double cluster (where inc was made on last round); Ch1, 2 cl into this space; 1 cl into next 4 spaces; *2 cl into next space; 1 cluster into next 4 spaces*; rep from * to * to end. sl st to beg cl. Fasten off Blue. 54 clusters).

Row 9: Attach Red to space between a double cluster (where inc was made on last round); Ch1, 2 cl into this space; 1 cl into next 5 spaces; *2 cl into next space; 1 cluster into next 5 spaces*; rep from * to * to end. sl st to beg cl. Fasten off Blue. 63 clusters).

Row 10: Attach White to any space between clusters; Ch1, cl into this space; cl into next space and every space to end. sl st to beg cl. Fasten off White. (63 clusters).

Row 11: Attach Blue to any space between clusters. Ch1, sc into same space; 2 sc into next space and every space to end, sc once more in beg space to make a total of 2 sc in that space; sl st to beg sc.

Row 12: Ch1, sl st to next space; Into this space and every space following, work (sc, hdc, dc); sl st to beg sc. Fasten off Blue and tidy up ends.
