Sunday Best Cloche/Sunhat

A lovely little Summer-sunshine hat which you can make as a Sunhat, or a cloche; with a 3-layer flower to make it even prettier!  In cool, crisp cotton to keep you comfortable in the hot weather.


To fit:  Teens and Adults


Gauge:  15 sts and 12 rows sts working sc with 5mm hook = 4"


Difficulty:  Intermediate


Hooks required: For Teens – 4.5 mm; For Adults - 5mm


Materials:  Worsted Weight Cotton (aran/10ply/grade 4); I used Lily Sugar ‘n Cream in White and Soft Violet; yarn needle; small button.


Abbreviations:  Sc - single crochet; dc – double crochet; hdc – half double crochet
Sl st – slip stitch; rep – repeat; ch – chain; sk - skip; beg = beginning


Pattern:
Pattern is written in US format; a conversion chart is included at the end


Row 1: With Main colour, and required hook for size, make a magic ring; (alternatively, chain 4 and slip stitch to 1st chain to form a ring), ch 1, work 8 hdc into ring, sl st to beg hdc. (8)


Row 2: Ch 1, 2 hdc in every stitch around, sl st to beg hdc. (16)


Row 3: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same sp as ch 1; 2 hdc in next stitch, *1 hdc in next stitch; 2 hdc in next stitch*; rep from * to * to end; sl st to beg hdc. (24)


Row 4: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same sp as ch 1; 1 hdc in next st; 2 hdc in next stitch, *1 hdc in next 2 sts; 2 hdc in next stitch*; rep from * to * to end; sl st to beg hdc. (32)


Row 5: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same sp as ch 1, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next stitch; *1 hdc in next 3 sts; 2 hdc in next stitch*; rep from * to * to end; sl st to beg hdc. (40)


Row 6: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same sp as ch 1, 1 hdc in next 3 sts, 2 hdc in next stitch; *1 hdc in next 4 sts; 2 hdc in next stitch*; rep from * to * to end; sl st to beg hdc. (48)


Row 7: Ch 1, 1 hdc in same sp as ch 1, 1 hdc in next 4 sts, 2 hdc in next stitch; *1 hdc in next 5 sts; 2 hdc in next stitch*; rep from * to * to end; sl st to beg hdc. (56)


Row 8: Ch 2, work 1 row of 1 hdc in each st around, sl st to beg ch 2 (56)


Row 9: Ch 3, 3 dc in same space as 3 ch; sk 3 sts; (hdc 2, ch 2, hdc 2) into next st; sk 3 sts; *4 dc in next st; sk 3 sts; (hdc 2, ch 2, hdc 2) into next st; sk 3 sts* rep from * to * around; sl st to starting ch 3.


Row 10: (HDC row) Ch 2; hdc in next 3 sts; sk 1 st; hdc in next, 2 hdc in ch 2 sp; hdc in next; sk next st; *hdc in next 4 sts, sk 1 st; hdc in next st; 2 hdc in ch 2 sp; hdc in next st; sk 1 st; * rep from * to * to end; sl st in top of beg ch 2. (56)


Row 11: Sl st 2 sts; ch 2; (1 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc) all in same sp as ch 2; sk 3 sts; 4 dc in next st; sk 3 sts; *(2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc) in next; sk 3 sts; 4 dc in next st, sk 3 sts;* rep from * to * to end; sl st to top of beg ch 2.


Row 12: Sl st over first 2 sts to ch 2 sp, ch 2, hdc in ch 2 sp, hdc in next st, sk 1 st, hdc in next 4 sts, sk 1 st, *hdc in next st, 2 hdc in ch 2 sp, hdc in next st, sk 1 st, hdc in next 4 sts, sk 1 st *, repeat from * to * to end, hdc in last st, sl st to beg ch 2. (56)


Row 13: Repeat Row 9


Row 14: Ch 2; hdc in next 3 sts; sk 1 st; hdc in next, 2 hdc in ch 2 sp; hdc in next; sk next st; *hdc in next 4 sts, sk 1 st; hdc in next st; 2 hdc in ch 2 sp; hdc in next st; sk 1 st; * rep from * to * to end; sl st in top of beg ch 2.


Row 15: Rep row 11.


Row 16: Rep row 12.


Repeat rows 13-16 until hat measure 6.5” for Teens and 7” for Adults, ending on a HDC row.


For a Cloche:


Row 1:  Ch 1, 2 sc in every stitch around, sl st to beg sc.
Row 2:  Ch1, sc in every stitch around, sl st to beg sc.
Row 3:  Change to contrasting colour; Ch1, sc in every stitch around, sl st to beg sc.  Fasten off and tidy up ends.  Go to 3 Layer Flower Pattern.


For a Sunhat:


Rows 1-3:  Work as for Cloche to Row 2, but increase again on Row 3 as follows: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st; * sc in next 4 sts; 2 sc in next*, rep from * to * to end, sl st to beg sc.
Rows 4-5:  Ch1, sc in every stitch around, sl st to beg sc.
Row 6:  Change to contrasting colour; Ch 1; sc in every stitch around; sl st to beg sc.
Fasten off. and tidy up ends.  Go to 3 Layer Flower Pattern.


3 Layer Flower Pattern:

Row 1:  Make a magic ring, or alternatively ch 4, sl st to 1st chain to make a ring;  Ch 1, sc 1 into ring, ch 3; (5 times) sl st to 1st sc (5 loops).


Row 2:  Sc into the nearest loop, (ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1, sl st) in loop, sc into next loop. Repeat around to make 5 petals.


Row 3: Ch 2, working at the back of the flower, (change colour here if you wish to) sc into the middle of the back of a petal, ch 4, sc into the middle of the back of the next petal. Repeat around until you have made 5 loops. Sc into the nearest loop, (ch 1, 4 dc, ch 1, sl st) in loop, sc into next loop. Repeat around to make 5 petals


Row 4:  Ch2, working at the back of the flower, (change colour again here is you wish to) sc into the middle of the back of a petal from Row 3, ch 5, sc into the middle of the back of the next petal, repeat around until you have 5 loops.


Row 5:  Sc into the nearest loop, (ch 1, 5 dc, ch 1, sl st) in loop, sc into next loop. Repeat around to make 5 petals.  Fasten off, tidy up ends, attach the flower to the hat, adding a button or pearl to the middle of the first layer.


Sew onto hat and tidy up loose ends.
