2015 CWU & AC CAL Wagon Wheel Square
Materials: A total of 15 g (26-30 yds) Worsted weight yarn #4; 5mm (H/8) hook; yarn needle. Sample was made using Lion Brand Heartland in “Denali” (pink), “Everglades” (green) and “Acadia” (Cream).
Abbreviations: sc = single crochet; ch = chain; sl st = slip stitch; hdc = half double crochet; dc = double crochet; trc = treble crochet; st/s = stitch/es; rep = repeat; beg = beginning; sp = space.
Gauge: Not critical for this pattern but the finished square must be 6” for the Blanket CAL. Adjust your hook up or down a size depending on your own tension. With 5mm hook, mine was 5 x 3dc clusters and 6 rows of 3dc clusters in 4” x 4”
Finished size: 6” x 6”
Pattern is written in US terms; a conversion chart is included at the end.
Use the colours of your choice as Colour A, Colour B and Colour C.
Row 1: With Colour A and 5mm hook, make a magic ring, ch1, work 8 sc into the ring. Sl st to beg sc to join. Alternatively, ch4, sl st into the last chain from the hook to make a ring, then work your 8 sc into that ring, sl st to beg sc to join. (8)
Row 2: *Ch 4, sl st to 4th ch from hook and also into the next sc; rep from * 6 times; ch 4, sl st to 4th ch from hook and into the bottom of the 1st “spoke”.. Then slip stitch up to the top of the first “spoke”. (8 spokes)
Row 3: Ch1, sc in the same st as the ch1; (ch3, sc in top of next spoke) 7 times; ch3, sl st to beg sc, changing colour on the slip stitch. (32)
Row 4: With Colour B, Ch 1, sc in same st as ch1; (3sc in ch 3 space, sc in next sc) 7 times, 3 sc in next ch 3 space; sl st to beg sc. (32)
Row 5: Ch 2 (counts as 1 hdc), hdc in same st; (ch1, sk 1, 2 hdc in next st) 15 times; ch1, sl st to beg ch2, changing colour on the slip stitch. (48)
Row 6: Ch 3, working in the space behind the ch3, 2 dc in same space; 3 dc in next space; *(3 trc, ch2, 3 trc) into next space**; 3dc in next 3 spaces; rep from * 3 more times ending last rep at **. 3dc in next space, sl st to beg ch 3, changing colour on the slip stitch. (68)
Row 7: Ch 3, working in the space behind the ch3, 2 dc in that same space; 3 dc in next 2 spaces; *(3 dc, ch2, 3 dc) in next space; 3 dc in next 4 spaces; rep from * twice; (3dc, ch2, 3dc) in next space; 3 dc in next space, sl st to beg ch3. Fasten off and weave in your ends. (80)
