Squared Up

Squared Up

squp1b.jpg

Materials:  25g of Colour A, 25g Colour B, oddment of colour C, (approx 100 yds in total) worsted weight yarn #4; 5.5mm (I/9) crochet hook; yarn needle for sewing in ends.

Gauge:  12 hdc and 10 rows hdc to 4” square

Finished size:  6” square

Pattern Notes:  Unless stated otherwise, all sts are worked into the gaps between sts, and not into the tops of the sts themselves.

Pattern is written in US terms, a conversion chart is included at the end.

Special stitches:

Picot corners:  (ch 4, sl st to 3rd ch from hook to form the picot, ch1)

Working into the 3rd and 4th loops of hdc below:  On every hdc, you will see that there are 2 loops, as normal, at the top of the stitch, the front and back loops.   A hdc also has 2 more loops behind it, the 3rd and 4th loop.   Where stated, work into these 2 loops, not the normal front and back loops.  Tamara Kelly of moogly.com has made a great video for working into the 3rd loop.  The 4th loop is the tiny loop just behind the 3rd loop.  The video is here:

Note:  If you have difficulty finding the 4th loop, work in the 3rd loop only if you wish.  I prefer to work in both, as it makes the stitching neater.

Abbreviations:  sc = single crochet; hdc = half double crochet; ch = chain, sk = skip; rep = repeat; beg = beginning; st/s = stitch/es; sp = space.

Instructions:

Row 1:  With Colour A and 5.5mm (I/9) hook, make a magic ring.

Row 3:  Ch1, sc in 3rd and 4th loop (see Special Stitches) of 1st hdc to the right of the ch2 corner space.  *Ch2, sk corner space, sc in 3rd and 4th loops of the hdc to the left of the corner space; ch2, sk 1 st, sc in 3rd and 4th loops of the next st (to the right of the next corner);  rep from * twice more; ch2, sk corner space, sc in 3rd and 4th loops of the hdc to the left of the corner space; ch2, sk1 st, sl st to beg sc.  Fasten off and change colour.  (8 sc and 8 x ch2 spaces)

(24 hdc, 4 sc, 4 x ch3 spaces)

Row 6:  Ch1, sc in 3rd and 4th loops of same st, , ch1, sk 1, sc in 3rd and 4th loops of next st (to the right of the corner); *ch2, sc in 3rd and 4th loops of 1st st after the next corner; ch1, sk1, sc in 3rd and 4th loops of next st; ch2, sk2, sc in 3rd & 4th loops of next st; ch1, sc in 3rd & 4th loops of next st; rep from * twice; ch2, sk corner, sc in 3rd and 4th loops of 1st stitch after the next corner; ch1, sk1, sc in 3rd & 4th loops of next st, ch2, sl st to beg sc. (16 sc & 16 spaces)  Fasten off and change colour.

(24 hdc, 24 sc, 4 x ch2 spaces)

Row 8:  For this row, work into the tops of the sts as you normally would.  Ch2 (counts as 1 hdc); hdc in next 8 sts; *(2hdc , ch2, 2hdc) in corner space; hdc in next 12 sts; rep from * twice; (2hdc, ch2, 2hdc) in corner space; hdc in next 3 sts; sl st to beg ch2. (64 hdc & 4 x ch2 spaces).  Fasten off and change colour.

Your square should now measure 5.5".  If it smaller, you may work the next row in hdc instead of sc.

Attach yarn with a slip stitch to the st to the left of where you fastened off.

Row 9:  Again working in the tops of the stitches as normal, and working now with Colour C, Ch1, sc in same st and in next 9 sts, *(2sc, ch2, 2sc) in corner space; sk next hdc (the one directly to the left of the corner ch2 space), sc in next 15 sts; rep from * twice; (2sc, ch2, 2sc) in corner space, sk next hdc (the one directly to the left of the corner ch2 space), sc in next 5 sts; sl st to beg sc, fasten off and weave in ends.
