The "Diana" Baby Skirt - 6-12 months

Here is the pattern for the "Diana" baby skirt - to fit 6-12 months.

I designed this ages ago and I have been told that mums love it because of its design with built in adjustable waistband and a stitch pattern that you can make any length without worrying about messing it up.

It's made with a rib, with worsted weight yarn, so ideally for Winter wear.  Babies get cold sitting in those little buggies!  There is a hat and booties to match.  I will get them posted up here as soon as I can.

For now, enjoy the "Diana" skirt, and let me see your pics!  I love to see my items actually being worn.  :)

“Diana” Ribbed Baby Skirt

Pattern is written in US terms, a chart is included for UK terms

Size: 6-12 months; 18”-22” Waist; Length 9” (adaptable)

With double button straps for size adjustment

Materials needed5mm hook, 2 skeins worsted weight yarn in Colour A (main colour) and oddments of yarn in Colour B; yarn needle; 4 small buttons

Abbreviations:  sc = single crochet; dc = double crochet; hdc = half double crochet; fpdc = front post double crochet; sl st = slip stitch; beg = beginning; ch = chain; rep = repeat

Pattern:

With 5mm hook and Colour A, make a single crochet foundation chain of 60 sts; alternatively, chain 61, work 1 sc into 2nd chain from hook, sc to the end.

Row 2:  Ch 3, dc in next st and to end; join to beg ch3 to form a loop (be careful not to twist the loop).

Row 3:  Ch1, sc in same st, sc all around, sl st to beg sc.

Row 4:  Ch 1, dc in same stitch; dc all around, st st to 1st dc.

Row 5:  Ch 1, sc in same st, sc 3, 2sc in next st, *sc 4, 2sc in next*; rep from * to * to end, sl st to beg sc. (72)

Row 6:  Ch 1, sc in same st, sc 4, 2sc in next st, *sc 5 2 sc in next*; rep from * to * to end, sl st to beg sc.  (84)

Row 7:  Ch 1, dc in same st, fpdc all around, sl st to 1st dc.

Row 8:  Ch 1, fpdc in 1st dc from last row; fpdc all around, sl st to beg fpdc.

Row 9:  Ch 1, fpdc around to end, sl st to 1st fpdc.

Repeat Row 9 until work measures 6.5” (17 cm).

Next Row:  Ch 1, fpdc into 1st 2 sts, hdc into next, *fpdc into next 2 sts, hdc into next*; rep from * to * to last stitch.  Fpdc into last st, sl st to top of beg fpdc.

Repeat this row until skirt measures 9” (22 cm).  Fasten off and weave in ends invisibly.

The next part is *optional* but I like to have a facing on the inside of a skirt, so that any belt, strap or tie doesn’t dig in to baby’s waist.  You can skip this part if you wish.

Inner Facing:  Attach yarn to centre back of waistband, working from the right side, sc in blo all the way around, sl st to beg sc.  (60)

Next Row:  Ch 1, dc in same st, dc all around, sl st to 1st dc.

Next Row:  Ch 1, sc in same st, sc all around, sl st to beg sc.

Next Row:  Ch 1, dc in same st, dc all around, sl st to 1st dc.

Next Row:  Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next, *sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next*, rep from * to * all around, sl st to beg sc.  (72)

Next Row:  Ch 1, sc in same st, sc 4, 2sc in next st, *sc 5 2 sc in next*; rep from * to * to end, sl st to beg sc.  (84)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail, and whip stitch the edge of the facing on to the first inner “rib” rowDon’t work this too tightly, keep the stretch in the waistband.

Edgings:

With contrast Colour B, attach yarn to centre back at top edge of waistband, Ch 1, sc all around, sl st to beg sc, fasten off and weave in ends.

With contrast Colour B, attach yarn to bottom edge of the skirt at the back seam, Ch 1, sc all around, sl st to beg sc, fasten off and weave in end invisibly.

Straps:  (Make 2)  Chain 70, hdc in 3rd chain from hook, and to end, do not turn.

Work (3dc, 1sc) into last chain loop, sl st in next stitch and across the unused bottom loops of the starting chain, sl st to beg sc.  Fasten off and weave in end invisibly.

Sew 4 small buttons onto the front of the skirt, and thread the straps through the two rows of dc,  passing the straps only through the outside of the waistband, not the inner facing.  Leave a gap at the front unthreaded, either side of the buttons, to allow the straps to be pulled in and out for adjustment.

Optional:  Using 3 strands of Colour B together, make a chain of 102, thread through at the lower part of the waistband, tie a bow at the front.

Enjoy your new baby skirt!
